What’s Happening at Good Shepherd
A Message from Anne Kennedy~
I am so grateful that so many of you have said you are free to meet at noon (for lunch!) on Saturday, September 16 to hear Gary Leber talk about his work at the Pregnancy Resource Center in Vestal. He is planning a great outline for us and I look forward to hearing of concrete ways we can support his work. I would love it if you could text me or email me to RSVP as I plan for lunch. If you end up being able to come at the last minute and can’t let me know that’s Completely Fine, but I would like to plan as closely as possible. We’ll meet at the church in the parish hall. So excited that this is really happening!
ACW Luncheon The Anglican Christian Women’s Luncheon was held last Saturday at the home of Pat and John Chaney, and all the women of the church were invited to partake in a lovely lunch.
Everyone seemed to be talking at once and the varied topics of conversation included catching up, and upcoming church activities.
Meanwhile downstairs, some of the husbands hung out but were invited to share in the meal as well.
All in all, it was a beautiful day where the ladies had a chance to get to know one another better and relax!
Thanks Pat and MaryAnn, and everyone who donated to the festivities. May God Bless you all.
School Supply Giveaway Thank you Thanks so much to all who helped make our School Supply Giveaway and FREE Barbecue a great success! We praise God for all who came and for the appreciation they expressed! Several said that they would like to attend Good Shepherd! Please keep these families in your prayers and pray for continued guidance as we seek to reach out to our neighbors!
Mission Group Update Mission group questions will resume next week.
Most groups will resume meeting this week. The group that used to meet at the Dreher home will merge with the Southside group that meets at Carrie Moorhead’s home starting on 9/26. Please see the week at a glance schedule for all meeting times and locations.
Shriver Baby Shower The ladies of Good Shepherd are all cordially invited to a baby shower for Janell Shriver and her precious baby girl on Saturday, September 23rd at 3pm at Good Shepherd. Please RSVP to Kit Donovan at firstname.lastname@example.org by September 15th.
They are registered at Babies-r-Us and Baby List (babylist.com). If it would be fun for you, please consider bringing your favorite children’s book (new or used) in lieu of a card! Let’s Shower them with love!
Water Please take time to offer a bottle of cool water to a passerby or a basketball player! If you spend any time at COGS, you will notice folks just outside our doors. Make that small effort to touch them as you offer a bottle of water in Christ’s name. The water bottles with Christ’s message are in the fridge.
An Offer of Prayer The prayer team prays for the needs of the church on a weekly basis. If you have a specific request (Praise or intercession) please fill out a card and place it in the “prayer box” by the bulletin boards in the parish hall. All prayers are kept confidential.
Mission’s Plea Yemen is the world’s worst humanitarian crisis today – 18.8 million people urgently need humanitarian assistance. If you’d like to learn more, please visit TearFund.org, the site that Barnabas Aid is recommending as a reputable avenue of giving.
Prayer Request Please be in prayer for a CHE worker and her family in Haiti – Dina, Enoch, and baby Andres, and for Pastor Chico’s (Darling’s husband, CHE Nicaragua) family in the DR, as everyone copes with the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Right now, we are praying for safety.
Mission’s Update Kit Donovan has served as Missions’ Coordinator for the last year or so and has done a superb job. But now being a mom and teaching Sunday school along with other pursuits has made it necessary for her to step aside from that role. Thank you Kit for your service for the Gospel and to the church.
Bill Freund has agreed to be our new Missions Coordinator, a role he helped to create and in which he has served ably in the past. I look forward to working with him to serve our missionaries and in considering how Good Shepherd can best promote the Gospel around the world. I am grateful for both Kit’s work on the committee and for Bill’s willingness to serve.
Bread and Wine If you are interested in joining a group of moms for a monthly supper and discussion of women in the bible, please contact Liz Hull.
Health and Wellness Our bodies are “the tents” that the Lord has given us to house our souls. Begin to take care of the body which God Has given you. Check your blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight every Sunday in the Parish Hall 9-10AM. Please see Dolly Shaller or Carmen Swoffer-Penna for more details.
Member Food Pantry
God Will Supply Our Every Need.
Have you ever been in a situation where you felt that there was no way out and then a good Samaritan steps up and
provides a solution and relieves your fears or stress?
Our Member Food Pantry is like that as we supply a need for families who don’t have the funds to put food on the table.
Therefore, by keeping our food pantry stocked with healthy foods, we provide a service for them. So, when you who can afford to help go to the market please remember to pick up something for the pantry as every little bit helps.
Items needed: Canned beef, ham, chicken soups and stews, peanut butter, canned fruits, and vegetables, assorted pasta and sauces, one box meals and anything else you’d like to bring.
Tuesday Morning’s Bible Study was broadcast on FaceBook Live. We studied Exodus 20. It can be viewed here.
Last Week in Christian Ed we continued our series: “Race, Life, and Sexuality.” We began by addressing racism. Have you ever wondered how Christians could possibly use the bible to support race-based slavery, segregation, and racial hegemony? They did. As a result skeptics often argue that scripture promotes racism and slavery. We looked at some of the arguments that were used to support theories of racial separation and supremacy and saw that they were not really “biblical arguments” at all. It’s not easy reading (emotionally speaking), but in preparation for the class, we took the time to read this sermon by Bob Jones (late president and founder of Bob Jones University) making a case for segregation in 1960 using the bible (but not actually making a biblical argument). See if you can spot the exegetical flaws (there are many). It’s important to be able to do this because many of the same arguments are, sadly, reemerging today and you need to be equipped to answer them.
Last Week’s Sermon was based on Hebrews 10:24-31, and was called ‘Falling Into the Hands of the Living God’. It can be listened to or downloaded here.
This Week in Christian Ed We’ll continue our ongoing series “Race, Sex, and Life”.
This Week’s Sermon is based on Hebrews 10:32-39.
But recall the former days when, after you were enlightened, you endured a hard struggle with sufferings, sometimes being publicly exposed to reproach and affliction, and sometimes being partners with those so treated. For you had compassion on those in prison, and you joyfully accepted the plundering of your property, since you knew that you yourselves had a better possession and an abiding one. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised. For,
“Yet a little while,
and the coming one will come and will not delay;
but my righteous one shall live by faith,
and if he shrinks back,
my soul has no pleasure in him.”
But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.

In this week’s episode, ‘Anxious Christianity and the ACNA’, Matt and Anne talk about the command not to worry and the impossibility of not feeling anxiety. Then we discuss the ACNA bishops’ meeting and their statement on women’s ordination.
