Good Shepherd Weekly Update, March 3, 2023

February 28, 2023Stephanie WarnerUncategorized, Weekly Update

Potluck This Sunday is the first Sunday of the month, so we’ll be back to our regular schedule of having a potluck after the 10:30 service.  This month’s theme is Breakfast Favorites.  Please consider bringing a dish to pass, but stay and have lunch even if you don’t!

Coffee Competition During the annual meeting we had our annual coffee competition.  We had four contenders this year, two Columbian coffees, and two French Roasts.

Congratulations to everyone who voted for option D, which won by a landslide!  Our official Good Shepherd Coffee of 2023 is Peet’s French Roast.

Annual Meeting Minutes The minutes of the 149th Annual meeting have been transcribed and are available by email request from the office in PDF format.

Change for Life It’s time to return your baby bottles for the Life Choices fundraiser.  Please give them to Christine Osgood, or drop them in the church office when you have a moment.

Thank you for your continued generosity toward this important outreach!

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Training Helpers
Anne is looking for people to help her with the practical details of the upcoming CGS training. The training will be meeting one weekend a month for almost a year, beginning in April, and there will be a good amount of setup, take down, meals, and logistical odds and ends to make it go smoothly. She would love help in big and small ways. If you’re interested, please email or text her or the office. Participants will be coming from all over the region, and we are looking forward to welcoming some of Good Shepherd’s diaspora. Anne promises a fun time for all helpers! Thank you!

Good Shepherd Food Pantry The Food Pantry is available to all members of Good Shepherd, and is also used by the church staff occasionally for community outreach.  The pantry is located in a small room off the kitchen.  Please bring food to donate when you are able, and please utilize the pantry when in need.

We are currently in need of canned meats, spaghetti sauce, peanut butter, and heat and eat meals like ravioli and canned soup.

Prayer Offered Good Shepherd has resumed offering Prayer on the side altar during Communion. Beginning this Sunday, you may notice a person standing at the side altar rail as you come forward to receive the bread and wine.  That person is part of the newly formed Prayer Ministry-people trained to pray for any anxieties or troubles you may have.  If you would like prayer for any reason, please feel free to stop as you pass.

Volunteers for Tech Team Are you a technologically capable person who would like to serve the church with your gifts? Good Shepherd is looking add a volunteer team to run sound and the livestream for our services. If this is a ministry that interests you, please reach out to Micah.

Home Groups Home Groups exist to glorify God and build up the church through weekly gatherings where members of Good Shepherd and non-members alike may come to grow in fellowship and discipleship around God’s word.

Sunday Worship and Holy Eucharist

The 8am service If you are high risk, or at all nervous to be in social gatherings, this service is designed for you. All those who attend are asked to remain socially distanced throughout the service. The 8am service is not currently being live-streamed.

The 10:30am service You can download a PDF copy of the service bulletin here.

This Sunday’s lectionary readings are: Genesis 12:1-9, Psalm 33:12-21, Acts 5:33-42, and John 3:1-16.

You’ll also notice that there are links in the offertory section to take you out to two different means of giving electronically. You can give online through Breeze or you can text a donation through Breeze at 607-882-6551. Good Shepherd also has a PayPal account. As always, thank you for your great generosity and kind support.

Catching Up…

Last Sunday’s Sermon Last Sunday, Matt preached on Acts 5:21b-32.  You can listen or watch ‘Leader and Savior’ here. You can find previous sermons here.

Christian Education This Sunday we continued our Christian Education series for adults built around Carl Trueman’s book, “The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self.”

You can watch that class here.

You can find previous classes here.

Zoom Morning Prayer This service normally meets online by zoom at 7am Monday through Friday.  The liturgy and readings are available each day at www.dailyoffice2019.com.  Join the parish email list and look for a weekly email invitation in your inbox.

Preventing Grace Did you know that Matt and Anne have a podcast?  In this week’s installment, ‘Anglican Altar Calls, Misusing the Imago Dei, and Misgendering God’, Anne and Matt recap last week’s discussion of Asbury and revivalism and talk about the Eucharist as an Anglican altar call. Then they listen to a clip from a preacher telling his congregation that they are all gods and discuss the increasingly popular habit of skipping Genesis 3 and grounding all Christian doctrine in Genesis 1-2 and a pristine imago dei. Finally, they talk about the Church of England moving away from masculine language for God and why God’s pronouns are not they/them.

Miss an episode?  You can find many previous recordings here.

The Cranmer Fellows Podcast (CFP) explores pastoral ministry and theology from an Anglican perspective. CFP is a project that Jon and Matt have undertaken in order to 1) encapsulate the pastoral training Matt has given men over the years into an accessible resource and 2) serve as a door to, we pray, a future program to train more people for ministry. Though geared toward the pastor, ministry leader, and pastor-in-training, what Jon and Matt talk about is applicable to all Christians!

You can subscribe to CFP on all major platforms. Here is a link where you can listen! https://anchor.fm/thecranmerfellowspodcast

Tuesday Morning Bible Study This Tuesday’s class was cancelled due to weather.  We hope to be back to our series on the miracles of Jesus next Tuesday.

Miss a class?  You can find all of the previous classes in this series and previous series here.

Thursday Evening Beginner’s Bible Study The Thursday evening study meets in person at 6pm in the classroom area. The class is working through the book of Judges.  This is a great place to connect with others and learn more about what God has to say to us through his word.

Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study The Men’s bible study meets at 6am each Friday morning, and they are currently studying the book of Jeremiah.

Women’s Bible Study This study is meeting at 4:30 pm on Friday afternoons in the Parish Hall.  Anne Kennedy is leading and they are studying the book of Daniel. Children are welcome—as in, we hope to have some childcare available.  If you’d like to join by zoom, please join the church email list and look for a link in the weekly update email.
