Good Shepherd Weekly Update, July 23, 2022

July 23, 2022Stephanie WarnerUncategorized, Weekly Update

What’s Happening at Good Shepherd This Week

Employment Opportunity Good Shepherd is looking to hire a custodian in a part time capacity. This is a 10-12 hour time commitment each week. If you or anyone you know might be interested in this position, please reach out to Micah.

Next Sunday Bishop Bena will be coming in to fill as supply for the Sunday services.  If you haven’t had a chance to meet bishop Dave, please do make some time to stop and say hello next week.

We are so thankful to have Bishop Bena coming in to preach and celebrate with us!

Did you Hear?  Mary Schuster and Nick Restino got married today!  Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Restino, and thanks to all who helped to make their day so special.

Summer Game Night Last Friday’s game night was a roaring success.  40-50 folks from Good Shepherd gathered together to play games, visit, and eat lots of good snacks.

There were several long and involved games of Go, Chess, Life, and Ticket to Ride.  I even heard  rumors that some brave soul broke out the Monopoly board!

Thank you to all who came out to make this such a fun evening!  We are looking forward to hosting another game night soon!

New Book Study Are you struggling with a relationship that has gone sideways? Is there someone you don’t know how to get along with? Do you have a family member who refuses to get help and healing? Are you anxious or unsure about how to relate to someone who seems to have it in for you, either in your family or the church?

Anne and Stephanie are going to be starting a book study on Edwin Friedman’s Generation to Generation. We are hoping for our first study to be on August 13, probably late afternoon, and probably on zoom, though we are open to feedback on the venue and time. We plan to go chapter by chapter through the book, engaging with the material. In Generation to Generation Friedman offers a series of helpful tools for working on difficult family and church situations. We won’t be doing psychology or counseling, so much as thinking through the web of relationships that constitute the body of Christ. If you’d like to join us, please see Anne or Stephanie. We’d love for you to join us!

Sunday Worship and Holy Eucharist Both the 8am and the 10:30 services are meeting in person.

The 8am service If you are high risk, or at all nervous to be in social gatherings, this service is designed for you. All those who attend are asked remain socially distanced throughout the service. The 8am service is not currently being live-streamed.

The 10:30am service You can download a PDF copy of the service bulletin here.  One of the joys of having a fully digital bulletin is that we are free to use color! You’ll find that some of the artwork and many of the directions are in full color.

You’ll also notice that there are links in the offertory section to take you out to two different means of giving electronically. You can give online through Breeze or you can text a donation through Breeze at 607-882-6551. Good Shepherd also has a PayPal account. If you choose to give via PayPal you can avoid fees by paying directly from your bank. Be sure to uncheck the box that says, “paying for goods and services” at the bottom or PayPal will charge Good Shepherd a fee. As always, thank you for your great generosity and kind support.

The lectionary readings for this week are: Genesis 18:20-33, Psalm 138, Colossians 2:6-15, and Luke 11:1-13.

Shepherd’s Bowl Community Dinner A Community Dinner is served every Thursday evening at 5:30pm in the parish hall, a fresh tasty meal served by cheerful volunteers. This is a welcoming, friendly atmosphere for church and community members to come and enjoy, regardless of income. Terry Ray leads a beginners Bible study at 6:00 and anyone is welcome to attend. Please find our page on Facebook, Shepherd’s Bowl Free Community Meal, and follow, like and share posts, and invite friends. It all helps! As we try to regrow our attendance, we especially invite church members to come and eat and help welcome visitors. We are also in need of volunteers. If you’d like to join a team, can be available as a sub, or are even interested in being a cook, contact Martha Rice or Mary Schuster.

Catching Up…

Last Sunday’s Sermon Last week Matt preached on Genesis 18:1-14.  You can find ‘He Lifted Up His Eyes’ here. You can find previous sermons here.

Christian Education If you missed Christian Ed on Sunday, Jonathan taught on how to read the Old Testament laws.

You can catch that class here.

You can find previous Christian Education classes here.

Tuesday Morning Bible Study This Tuesday Morning we continued our series on The Parables of Christ.  You can watch here. We’ll move through the parables chronologically, beginning with the earliest recorded ones and finishing off with his last parables in Jerusalem before his crucifixion. This week we looked at the parables of the good Samaritan and the friend in need.  Miss a class?  You can find all of the previous classes in this series and previous series here.

Thursday Evening Beginner’s Bible Study The Thursday evening study meets in person at 6pm in the classroom area. Mr. Terry Ray is leading the class through the book of Nahum.  This is a great place to connect with others and learn more about what God has to say to us through his word.

Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study The Men’s bible study meets at 6am each Friday morning, and they are currently studying the book of 2 Peter.

Women’s Bible Study This study is meeting at 4:30 pm on Friday afternoons in the Parish Hall.  Anne Kennedy is leading and they just finished a study on the book of James. Children are welcome—as in, we hope to have some childcare available.  If you’d like to join by zoom, please join the church email list and look for a link in the weekly update email.
