Good Shepherd Update: Thursday, April 15, 2010
The following is from Ife:
Dear Good Shepherd,
Good morning. As most of you know, the Kennedys are on their vacation. They are still on their way to Texas, so remember to keep them in your prayers.
But that doesn’t mean we are to neglect the meeting of the saints (Hebrews 10:25). Let us take Matt’s challenge to heart. Christ is Lord and Head of His church, not the senior pastor, and He will be present whether Matt is here or not.
Here is Matt’s challenge for us last week:
1. Commit to come to be here each of the three Sundays—the 18th, 25th, and May 2nd.
2. Commit to invite a friend to come to church with you each of the three Sundays.
3. Commit to continue attending Bible study and/or class each week.
Men’s Bible Study and Breakfast will continue in their study of 2 Samuel tomorrow morning at 6:30. All men are invited.
Thursday Night Bible Study: I will be leading the Bible study for the time Matt will be away. If you are a new Christian or just have questions about the Bible, this is a great Bible study for you. All are welcome.
Women’s Bible Study will be meeting at its usual time on Saturday morning.
Systematic Theology is on hiatus while Matt is on vacation.
Tuesday morning and evening Bible studies will be held at their usual times.
Morning Bible study is 9am – led by Chris Vail
Evening Bible study is 6:30pm – led by Ife
This Sunday, April 18th, Reverend Mike Baumann will be preaching the Word and celebrating Communion. Here is a short description of him.
Father Bill Day will be leading worship on the 25th of April and May 2nd.
The Ham and Scalloped-Potato Dinner will be April 21st from 5 to 7 PM. Adults: $5. Children 11 and under are free.
From Carmen:
Applesauce and Cupcakes: Please bring homemade applesauce and/or cupcakes to church for serving at the Ham and Scalloped-Potato Dinner, OR join us on Saturday at 11 AM when we will be making applesauce for the event.
Gifting Dinners: If you are interested in “gifting” ham and scalloped-potato dinners, see Cookie, Kay, or Carmen. This is a great way to show hospitality and reach out to others.
Youth Group Update:
Senior High – Sunday, 6-8pm
Junior High – Monday, 6:30-8pm
Office Hours and Availability:
I will be in the church office between 2-4 PM, Tuesday through Friday. And please call the church if you have any questions or concerns. The church number is (607) 723-8032.
Good News for the Week:
Acts 9:1-20 (NIV):
Meanwhile, Saul was still breathing out murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples. He went to the high priest and asked him for letters to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any there who belonged to the Way, whether men or women, he might take them as prisoners to Jerusalem. As he neared Damascus on his journey, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice say to him, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?”
“Who are you, Lord?” Saul asked.
“I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting,” he replied. “Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
The men traveling with Saul stood there speechless; they heard the sound but did not see anyone. Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing. So they led him by the hand into Damascus. For three days he was blind, and did not eat or drink anything.
In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”
“Yes, Lord,” he answered.
The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.”
“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.”
But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.”
Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength.
Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus. At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God.
Remember to invite friends and family to church!
